The Kallang Theatre, touted as the largest commercial cinema in Singapore when it first opened in the early 1970's, was later converted to a theatre for the performing arts in 1986. It is the Council's largest theatre, and houses a well-furnished auditorium with a 1744 seating capacity. Other facilities include four in-house music studios, a dance studio and an orchestra room. Today, its extensive facilities have made it an ideal venue for dance presentations, operas, musicals, meetings and other ceremonial events. Major performances at the theatre included productions of Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Ninagawa's Macbeth, the Paris Opera Ballet and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
